February is National Grapefruit Month!
Naturally packed with Vitamin C, grapefruit juice helps boost the immune system during winter months when colds and flu are at their peak. I've put together my favorite (easy!) ways of incorporating this ruby citrus into your everyday routine. Enjoy!
It seems that lemons get all the attention when it comes to adding a splash of flavor to your everyday H2O. Next time, swap out your typical lemon wedge with a juicy slice of grapefruit! I also like to mix half tap water / half La Croix Grapefruit Sparkling water with a squeeze of fresh grapefruit. And if you're really wanting to up your intake of natural benefits, a drop of Young Living's Grapefruit Essential Oil adds a perfect punch. Grapefruit is naturally energizing and uplifting making it the perfect match for a hydration break! Pucker up!
Grapefruit cocktails are my favorite! Grapefruit juice is naturally fat-free and cholesterol-free and is one of the lowest calorie and nutrient dense juice choices. Win. Win. (I like to think these rockstar health benefits totally cancel out any negative reputation vodka might have!)
If I'm out and about, my go-to drink order is Vodka + Club Soda + Splash of Grapefruit. Always go with Club Soda instead of Tonic! Club soda has zero sugar and zero calories versus tonic water which is loaded with both! (One 12-oz can has about 125 calories and 30 grams of sugar!) The splash of grapefruit juice will give you an all-natural spike of sweetness.
At home, I have two favorite grapefruit infused cocktails that I make:
The Sparkling Grapefruit // La Croix Grapefruit Sparkling Water (zero calories!) mixed with club soda (I like a little fizz!) and vodka is an easy combo. Add a squeeze of fresh grapefruit or a splash of 100% grapefruit juice to turn up the sass.
Grapefruit Mule // Vodka + Diet Ginger Beer + splash of club soda + splash of grapefruit juice. I usually add a lime and/or grapefruit wedge as well. YUMM!
Both of these drinks work well for large parties. They mix and hold well in a large pitcher making it easy to serve lots of people! I need to get better about measuring my portions for you, but for now my best advice is to keep adding a splash here and there until it tastes good :)
If you're more of a Tequila gal, try this:
Grapefruit Paloma // Tequila + freshly squeezed or 100% grapefruit juice + club soda + splash of lime + pinch of salt.
These basic ingredients will make a fairly dry cocktail. If you need more sweetness, add a sprinkle of sugar. I usually try to stay away from simple syrup because it's so easy to add a ton of sugar without even realizing it! Adding just a sprinkle of granulated sugar at least makes me feel like I have more control over how much sugar actually goes into the drink.
Again, play around with your portions. Some people like more sour/tart vs. sweet. In all of my make-at-home cocktails, I usually do 3 parts juice/mixer to 1 part liquor, and then add splashes of extra ingredients as needed. *Note: I will clearly never be someone to publish a recipe book!
DIY Grapefruit Rosé
Ok. So you're either going to think I'm totally crazy, or that I'm late to the party, because this idea was so last season. Either way, I'm completely obsessed with this twist on Rosé.
Grab your favorite bottle of blush-hued Rosé and a can of the above mentioned La Croix Grapefruit Sparkling Water. Combine 2 parts wine with 1 part sparkling water. Add a small squeeze of fresh grapefruit and/or a drop of Grapefruit Essential Oil and Voilà! So, so good!
Grapefruit Sugar Scrub
I LOVE Sugar Scrubs! Like, love, love, love, LOVE! Especially citrus sugar scrubs. Grapefruit is packed with antioxidants which help fight wrinkle-causing free radicals, discoloration and dull complexions. Here's my super easy, affordable scrub that will leave your face and skin feeling smooth, hydrated and luxurious!
Ingredients // Granulated Sugar + *Oil of choice* + Freshly squeezed grapefruit (1/2 of fruit) + 5 drops of Grapefruit Essential Oil.
Directions // Mix all ingredients in glass jar. And that's it. Easy peasy. I typically use 1 part oil with 2 parts sugar, but you can adjust your ratios depending on what consistency you like. Less oil = thicker, more granulated.
Recommendation // *I'm a huge fan of Grapeseed Oil (Avocado Oil is great, too!) and have found it does wonders for my complexion. I have combination skin and grapeseed oil is a little lighter than olive oil. It dually absorbs well and rinses off well, leaving my face feeling hydrated and not at all greasy. If your skin is more on the dry side, opt for Olive Oil.
